The Leixões Oil Terminal marks 50 years since its inauguration with the arrival of the oil tanker “Larouco”, on October 8, 1969. The Administration of the Ports of Douro, Leixões and Viana do Castelo (APDL) moves forward with a balance: since the beginning of the century (2001-2019) this terminal, which includes the Monobóia located 3.3 km off Leça da Palmeira, has handled 155 million tons of liquid hydrocarbon bulk, with the mooring of 9247 Tankers.

To commemorate this milestone, APDL together with Galp Energia will promote, during the month of October, the exhibition “A Sea that unites us: 50 Years of the inauguration of the Leixões Oil Terminal”, which will soon be on display at the Cruises for public visit.

The Leixões Oil Terminal, which operates in close cooperation with the Oceanic Terminal – the emblematic Monobóia -, is responsible for the handling of loads and unloads, on average and per year, of 7.5 million tons of liquid bulk, including the supply of raw material to the Matosinhos refinery and the products it ships by sea.

In order to maintain its leading role in the country, not only in supplying energy to the north, but also ensuring an increase in national exports, Galp Energia refurbished the Terminal with investments focused on reliability, safety and the environment. Started in 2005, the requalification involved the replacement of the loading arms of the three posts in the terminal, as well as the replacement of all the pipes, electrical network and fire-fighting system.

It should be remembered that the Oil Terminal was built on the submerged breakwater, 700 meters long and 15 meters above sea level, also serving as protection at the entrance to the Port of Leixões. Connected to the refinery complex and storage facilities by about two dozen oil and gas pipelines, this terminal serves as a gateway for all products used by the Matosinhos Refinery, as well as by Cepsa’s facilities.
